Issue 4, 2007Andreeva Т. Е. Knowledge Worker: An Attempt to Define Phenomena Management literature claims that so called «knowledge workers», playing more and more important role in contemporary economy, represent specific type of workforce that requires new approaches to its management. However the question about what employees constitute this group and what are its peculiarities still does not have clear solution. Such ambiguity hampers both progress in empirical research on knowledge workers and development of practical recommendations on managing this group of employees. This paper presents critical analysis of various criteria for considering an individual being knowledge worker and develops alternative approach to definition of this group. It also discusses some special features of knowledge workers and proposes some directions for future empirical research. |
